"Our 15 year-old son has enjoyed attending Saeng Myong Martial Arts for over four years now. Under the instruction of Sa Bom Nim Merta, our son has not only learned the proper physical techniques of Tae Kwon Do, but he has also come to appreciate the history and traditions in which the school is rooted. The school has challenged him to push beyond what he thinks he can physically do, and he is encouraged to master techniques and achieve belts at his own pace. Over the last couple of years he has learned greater self-discipline and respect for himself and others, and as a result it has improved his self-confidence.
Our family highly recommends Saeng Myong martial arts school. Owner/Instructor Dennis Merta delivers high quality instruction, inviting students to do more than just attend classes. He encourages and guides each student to be self-disciplined, and to embody the tenets of respect, integrity, responsibility, perseverance and indomitable spirit to become a role model for each other, their families and their community."

"My 11 year old son has been attending martial arts classes at Saeng Myong for the past two years and loves it - he would go everyday if we let him! It has been a positive experience and we are thrilled that his sister signed on to start this week. My husband and I appreciate how the instruction includes respect and integrity in everyday life and feel fortunate to be involved in the Saeng Myong community."

"Vital Defense has SOLID self defense techniques for women against male attackers. Part of the course involved a man in a custom-fitted padded suit that you fight, full force, until you 'knock him out.' Sounds intimidating? Relax. THIS CLASS IS PHENOMENAL and intense, especially when you consider how much fear of rape is part of female culture, how the half-life of an assault is several generations. Now I feel confident in my ability to KNOCK OUT AND INCAPACITATE a man as tall as men come and twice my weight. Because I DID it, at least six times. I was a tad sore the next day, but walking taller."

"I was very fortunate when I began my training to help a Sensei build his school from the ground up, and was a head instructor for eight years. When I moved away, I received some very wise advice from him, 'The teacher is more important than the style.' While I wanted to stay with the traditional Okinawan style I was used to, the instructors in my new town were not very competent. I tried more than 10 schools in the Denver area, but not a single one met my training requirements.
Thankfully, a co-worker told me about Saeng Myong, and I felt at home as soon as I walked through the front door. Sa Bom Nim Merta is a unique instructor who has the technical skills to instruct, a passion for teaching and a humility that comes from inner confidence - rare qualities most instructors do not have. I have been training for over 20 years and a school like Saeng Myong is a rare find. I have been very fortunate to call myself a student of Sa Bom Nim Merta's and am thankful to be considered part of the Saeng Myong family."

"I have been a TKD student at Saeng Myong's for a little over a year now but I have been in the martial arts community studying for 5 years total. I have received the most amazing instruction under Sa Bom Nim and his wife that I could have ever asked for.
It wasn't until the opportunity came up to take the Vital Defense class that I thought I should check it out. And let me just say - WOW! This class is AMAZING, for lack of a better word. I came away from the class with a voice...a loud, confident, able-to-kick-some-butt voice! I got my right to say "NO," my right to feel, the right to live out loud again. I found myself walking a different walk that left me just beaming all over with life after taking the course!
You learn certain personality types, what to watch for, what to do in different situations, then you actually take on a "fight" scene to put it into muscle memory. It's like no other defense class I have ever taken before. It was the most amazing experience I have ever gone through. I never want to take the "it couldn't happen to me" attitude. In taking on that approach, there's too many unknowns. I am so glad, and so fortunate, to have stumbled upon this community and this class that has given me a power from within to take with me on my daily journeys! I wish everyone would take a step out of their own box, their own comfort zone, and take the challenge - Just Do It - take the class. This will TOTALLY change your life, I believe that with all that I am as it has for me."

"Tae Kwon Do first became an interest so I could learn how to defend myself when necessary, or even against my three older brothers when they teased me! The more I got involved, the more I fell in love with it. Tae Kwon Do became who I am and what I do. It is not just a hobby or something I do in my spare time, but a passion. Saeng Myong has taught me so much about life between defending myself and being part of the five tenets. Tae Kwon Do changed my life and has made me a better person in many ways."

"I value what Sa Bom Nim taught me about fighting at Saeng Myong. My problem was not physical, but mental. I was afraid to attack, slow to defend, nervous and clumsy with larger opponents, but after weeks of one on one attention, he taught me to think like a fighter. The goal of a fight is not to drag it on, or exhaust an opponent. It's to win. In sparring I learned to overcome the limits of pain, to endure and move on, even though sometimes, to be honest, sparring hurt. There were days when I came home bruised and bloody, sore and tired, the signs of effort. The school's environment allows us to push each other. My intent is to fight as safely and as fast as I possibly can so my partner may practice his blocks with speed and power, and he will do the same for me. We both spar to win to help each other develop the skills and mindset for a real fight.
At the same time, Sa Bom Nim emphasizes the five tenets, qualities essential to a martial artist. He demands a thorough understanding of courtesy, integrity, self discipline, perseverance and indomitable spirit from children and adults. These principles apply to Tae Kwon Do and beyond it. When I feel tired and overwhelmed, these principles keep me going. I tell myself to suck it up and keep going, and to tell the truth no matter what because everything takes effort and sacrifice. Saeng Myong has shown me that there is no easy way to get something worthwhile.
Nothing at Saeng Myong is fun, unless fun is breathing fast, working hard, and sweating profusely. After class, no one feels clean or playful, but strong and accomplished. On several occasions, I came to class reluctantly, feeling slow and lethargic after a long school day, but each time, Tae Kwon Do changed my attitude. Sa Bom Nim pushes and challenges the class, but the student ultimately chooses how hard he wants to try. To call Tae Kwon Do easy would be misleading. As in all things, hard work is rewarded, and one's success depends on how hard he pushes himself.

"Vital Defense helped me understand the different kinds of rapists out there. I had the confidence before I took the class to defend myself, but this class helped me realize that without learning these techniques it would be very difficult for me alone to defeat someone much bigger than me."

"Several years ago my wife began to look for a martial arts school for our 5 year old son. We looked into several schools, but time after time came away with negative feelings. Some of the schools offered very little for a high monthly payment. Others seemed more interested in promoting students without skill or the knowledge that should accompany obtaining a new belt. We were also disappointed that the schools didn't promote traditional martial arts philosophies or the culture of the country they were developed in.
Then we came upon Saeng Myong and Sa Bom Nim Merta. I was very impressed with Sa Bom Nim and the do jang. My son felt at home right away, loved the classes and enjoyed learning about the history of Tae Kwon Do and Korea. He started asking to come to classes and really applied himself. As he continued to attend classes, our family really began to appreciate the sense of family and community that exists at Saeng Myong. I felt the pull back to martial arts and began to attend classes with my son a couple of years ago.
I feel it has been a blessing for us to find Sa Bom Nim Merta and Saeng Myong. Through this school, my son has learned the benefits that come with hard work and perseverance. The path we have started on has been not only of learning Tae Kwon Do, but one of being part of a community. Saeng Myong does an excellent job of teaching traditional martial arts physical skills. More importantly, it promotes mental discipline, a strong moral code, and lessons that apply to all aspects of life. The school helps to reinforce strong family values that my son will take with him for the rest of his life."

"When I started Tae Kwon Do, I thought I would never become a black belt. As I became higher in rank, I became more confident. Now, as a red belt, I feel like I can make it to black belt!"

"I have been training at Saeng Myong for about five years now. It has been a wonderful journey that I hope lasts a lifetime. I have seen various schools in the area, and none of these could ever come close to the level of training I have received here. A lot of schools focus on tournaments and trophies. Here, it is all about tradition.
Sa Bom Nim Merta teaches you not just how to kick and punch but also a way in which to live your life. There are five basic tenets to follow which greatly impact your life. They are courtesy, integrity, self discipline, perseverance, indomitable spirit. All of these qualities are necessary to any martial artist and all people.
When you walk in the front door and see everyone in their uniforms you feel overwhelmed. When I walked in I was greeted and treated like I had been there for years. I was brand new and knew nothing. I felt intimidated and afraid, but when I was there it felt as though everyone took me under their wing. When you walk in you feel at home. Every member no matter their age or skill level is family. If anyone was ever in distress they know they can count on their fellow martial artists.
At Saeng Myong you are challenged. It is hard, and if you are looking for an easy black belt then do not come here, this is not a belt factory. The training is hard but very rewarding. At the end of class you feel refreshed because you know you accomplished something. People feel that the training must be good when the price is high. This school is an example of a well priced school with excellent training.
The training will teach you to fight but the most important lesson to be learned is how to live life. A friend of mine commented, 'People may say they have a martial arts rank, but at Saeng Myong you can say you earned your rank.' "

"The Vital Defense course was an intense emotional weekend. I gained a comprehensive psychological understanding of sexual predators and easy to remember physical skills. The course boosted by self-defense confidence."

"Thanks to Saeng Myong Martial Arts! We have been going to Saeng Myong for over five years. Our daughter has found something that she can succeed in and has been eager to go to classes regularly. Tae Kwon Do has taught her self discipline and she has improved tremendously with her balance. The instructors are so encouraging to her as she is able to work at her own pace and really earn her belts. We now have our six year old enrolled and excited about going to classes. It is helping him focus and respect others. These guys are great!"
