Parents' Training Guide
Make the Most Of It
To ensure that your child gets the most out of his or her training, we've provided some information and training assistance below. Your child's best chance of success is supported by an ongoing dialogue between you and the instructors, and we encourage you to speak with an instructor or Sa Bom Nim Merta anytime you have concerns or questions.
Please remember that every child progresses at his own rate, and may find that some techniques are easy to master while others can frustrate. We try to remind students that overcoming these challenges is exactly what builds character and skills that will be necessary throughout their lives.
It is common for both students and parents to compare skill levels with other students within a rank. Our instructors try to remind students that their training has nothing to do with anyone else's achievements, and refocus them. We ask that parents remember that we not only have a range of ages within ranks, but also physical and mental disabilities that we have to consider when promoting a student. Even though there is a minimum standard for each rank, there is also a range of capability within the rank and each student's potential is a factor of advancement.

Practice
Just like learning a musical instrument, practicing at home is highly encouraged. Class time is best used to learn new techniques, get critiques, and making the most of the large space by teaming up with classmates to practice.
In order for you to help your child make progress, you can access the Junior Handbook to see the milestones at each belt level. You can also download the first 6 forms your student will learn as he or she is shown each one. Please do not skip ahead; the forms are difficult to learn from the written instructions alone, and martial arts tradition discourages students from going ahead without permission.
Usually when a child begins training, we recommend attending 2-3 classes per week for steady progression. With this schedule, the student should be able to attend regular belt testings until about purple belt, or the first 10 months or so. The speed of progress will, of course, vary with the child's age.

Motivation and Recognition
Saeng Myong encourages students to be internally motivated. We understand that children enjoy rewards and recognition for their achievements. We try to balance this by stressing internal satisfaction and motivation and celebrating the larger milestones, such as yearly training anniversaries. We believe that our job is to help your child reach his or her potential, teaching solid skills and not just filling uniforms with stripes and patches. We try to model good character and healthy attitudes while getting exercise and having fun.
Sometimes, students in the Junior Tae Kwon Do program will reach a certain level of competence and plateau in their progress for a time. Or perhaps summer break has started and students are beginning a new routine. Often families will take a vacation during the summer months and elect to have their child "take a break" from their training.
While we understand the reasons, Saeng Myong encourages martial arts students to keep their training going consistently, even if class attendance becomes infrequent. Often what happens to younger students is that the break in routine makes it difficult to encourage them to return to regular training. Important progress is then lost. Sometimes, even if the student wants to return to regular training, he is apprehensive due to self consciousness and fear over what he may have forgotten. He might compare himself to friends who did not take a break and feel that he has been "left behind."
There are many options for training available to families if you find that your current training schedule is not quite working for you. Please do not hesitate to contact Sa Bom Nim or Robbin Merta to discuss alternatives that will allow both the student and his school to thrive.
